Whumptober Day 22: Self Sacrifice
-
A demon, if nothing else, could change his life into something more than it is today. Worst case scenario, nothing happened and Beaford would just move on. Best case… things got better. That’s all he needed. A fresh start, anything different from what his life was like now, where he didn’t have to carry any more of this shame.
Surprisingly, he found an answer online that seemed authentic enough.

Whumptober Day 8: Disassociation
-
She stares at her reflection, pulling at the skin under her eyes and the twist of her mouth, stretched over bone and dry under her fingers, and she wonders if she would know if something was wrong. The woman in the mirror didn’t look much different than what Alicia had started to expect herself to look like, held together by the bare minimum and fraying at the edges.

Summary
Lillian's life had slipped away like ice melting between her fingers, and the droplets of it clung to her desperate fingers still, numbing the skin and the flesh and the muscle and the bone, chilling her so no fire could bring those frostbitten fingers back to life. She wished, sometimes, that cutting them off was an option. It wasn't, of course.
Just as cutting the stalks from Lillian's lungs had long ceased to be an option by the time she let it be known that she could hardly breathe through them. Lillian had breathed, laboriously, mouth flapping open uselessly, air hardly finding space to fight its way into her lungs.
They had been horrific things, grotesque, bulbous and long-stemmed and spotted glistening red, entirely too large to fit in Lillian's slender throat and yet fit they did until they no longer wanted to, clawing and curdling and hacking their way out of her, and Alicia would always remember it, the sound, retching and wet and heaving, the smell, ferrous and floral and sharp and sweet, the sight, speckled petals giving way to whole flowers and they were the most beautiful white lilies Alicia had ever seen.

Summary
Michel Liu was not a living thing. She had not been a living thing, not in a very long time. As far as she was concerned, she never had been, and death- true death, not this pathetic mockery of it she was wading through- would only be a long awaited reunion.
Michel remembered cold white tiles and sluggish red and the whistle of breath, she remembered a rasp of a cackle and a too-bright voice and an irreverent spill of words, she remembered doors gaping open and a palette knife on the sink and the sting of paint. Michel was a person half-done, fragmented, unnatural and had latched on, like a begrudging gosling of sorts, to the first living creature she had found.
It was only her luck that that creature would be Eurydice Knight.

Summary
Beaford Lysenworth broke things.
His hands were clumsy things, his fingers incongruent with each other, fumbling and slipping and indelicate, things meant to destroy. He never was a fixer, a builder, someone with worth.
Maybe that had been what had driven him to accept the King's offer. Maybe the first time Beaford had ever felt worth something was when the King had looked at him, all of sixteen years old, and extended a hand. You're gifted, my boy, the King had told him. It would be a shame to waste that.
The King had, of course, been lying. Beaford should have known that from the very beginning.

Summary
"My son," the Queen said, "is missing."
"Well observed, Your Majesty," Eurydice said, head bowed low.
Michel closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, her fist clenching a little bit tighter over her heart, fancying she could feel the cold coin dangling over her heart press closer, warming, as if to lament Eurydice Knight's interminable stupidity with her, imagining she had Eurydice's throat in her grasp. Michel could just about hear the Queen's jaw crumble from the impact of her teeth colliding together. Michel sympathised.
"My son, the Crown Prince, is missing," the Queen said again. "And he was under your care. Your protection."
"Once again, Your Majesty, your observational skills know no bounds."
"I do not," the Queen snapped, " need your clever little quips, Knight. I need to know how you could have allowed this to happen."
"With all due respect, Your Majesty, he did not exactly ask permission."

Summary
Alicia's apartment had always been a bit on the strange side.
This had never bothered Alicia.
Beaford, on the other hand, was very bothered.
"Why the fuck," Beaford was saying, lights above them flickering on and off at a diorientingly rapid pace, "are they doing that?"
"Try switching them off and on again," Alicia suggested, as she transferred a bit of holy water to a container and then filled the rest of the container with tap water. Beaford had once asked her if that diluted the holiness of the water. Alicia had said that maybe the holy water wasn't all that holy in the first place if a little tap water could strip it of its holiness.
"They're already off," Beaford said, voice thin and reedy, and Alicia knew that if she looked up, the quick taps she could hear would be paired with the sight of Beaford pacing back and forth. "And they're fucking lights, I don't think they work like that-"

Summary
Magnolia Faragher did not believe in the supernatural.
It was a good thing, then, that the supernatural did not exist.
Unfortunately for Magnolia, however, the townspeople very much did exist and they were, as far as she was concerned, fucking freaks.
Magnolia couldn't tell you why she lived here, if she were being entirely honest. She could say something about parents at home and accusations of unethical practices at labs and unfriendly faces and rising rent wherever she went. She could say something about small towns and smaller bills and scientific journals that sold like wildfire- relatively so, considering the size of the town- and no one thought to question how the findings were made. She could, in theory, say something about a lot of things. This did not mean she had to, though, and so she wouldn't.

Summary
"Your highness, you really shouldn't be here."
"Are you going to ask me to leave then?" Rafael said absently, stroking Uriel's dark mane. Perhaps he'd give her a little braid. Or even two.
Cain sighed, heavy and resigned. "Of course not, your highness. You just really, really shouldn't be here."
"So you've mentioned," Rafael said drily, nodding. "Do you think she would like it if I gave her little ribbon-bows at the ends of her braids?"
"I can't say I think that horse likes anything," Cain said begrudgingly, giving Uriel a wide berth to go over to the next horse to ensure the door to its stable was securely closed. "Except for you. Evidently."
"Don't say that," Rafael said, stepping away from Uriel. "She's just shy."
"She has tried to kill literally everyone else that comes near her. She bit me."
"Her social skills need some work," Rafael conceded, shrugging. "But whose don't?"

Summary
The girl seemed to understand, because a second later she beamed, beamed bright as the sun that filtered through the windows of Alicia's bedroom, brighter even. "Lillian," she'd said in answer to a question unspoken. "I'm Lillian."
"Lillian," Alicia had repeated, long and slow, far longer and slower than necessary, as if to savour the word. It was sweet.
"Do you want to read this with me?" Lillian had asked her, pushing forwards the thick book in her hands, A Brief History of Ancient Myths.
Alicia would never have read it if Lillian hadn't been there.
Alicia could not pretend to be much interested in the fantastical or the intangible, but Lillian was warm and Lillian was smiling and when the sun shed light upon their corner she realised her hair was a gentle brown, shocks of red bleeding through when the light hit just right, and her eyes were the deep brown of the earth, and her smiles were soft. When Lillian read aloud passages of light and gods and beauty Alicia settled down beside her and listened to her speak and thought of halos and clouds and wings.

Summary
"What, do you not think I'm pretty enough?"
Beaford raised an eyebrow, refusing to answer. Itou couldn't possibly be that stupid. "Fishing for compliments?"
"Oh, come on," Itou grinned, leaned forwards, and Beaford understood then, with sudden clarity, why Alicia held as much distaste for him as she did. Beaford wished then, fervently, prayed to whatever gods that may or may not be listening, that he, too, would one day finally develop a mind and heart half as sensible. "You think I'm a little pretty, right? I mean, there has to be a reason why you stuck with me for so long back then."
Beaford clicked his tongue, sighed, resisted the urge to tell Itou he needed to go back home. Or gave in to the urge to stay there, stay there with Itou. He had always been weak for him, or, at the very least, weaker for him than for others. "That was a long time ago."
Itou's smile twitched. "So it was."

Summary
Sometimes, Alicia swears she can still hear her.
Soft, echoing, but there, certainly there, and now if Alicia just turns her head then-
Nothing. She's dead. There's nothing more to say.
Or could there be?
