As fire rained and the screaming of the damned surrounding me, I fled. Skin searing red, blistered and bubbling as it practically peeler off my face and trailed down my neck. Everything happened to quickly, too soon for any of us to prepare.
My town, my people and community were set ablaze and drowned in smoke. I could only watch as the Kings ever so loyal guards tore down my life before me. We were once free, people who lived far away from the tyrant who sat pretty on his throne. But no one would be safe from a raging beast that thirsted for control.
My legs gave out after hours of running, my knees buckled as I tumbled down a hill just to end up near a creak. Everything hurt, my feet sore and bloody from fleeing without shoes. Crawling towards the water, I stared down at my reflection that I could barely see with my left eye blind and the aftermath of smoke still clouding my right.
Even with trembling arms, I plunged my face into the water, screaming as the burnt skin stung even further across my face and as water entered my lungs. I doubt I would live, but if I did, I would reclaim what was stolen from me.
