“Look, the worst thing he can do is kill us,” Meg points out, and rolls out of bed. She pokes him until he gets the message and turns around to face the wall, and starts getting dressed. She’s not confronting the king of the gods in her pyjamas. They’re her favorite ones. They might get burnt or something.
“Killing us is still pretty bad,” Apollo says, staring at the wall. His arms are folded and radiating stubbornness like... like a radiator made out of stubbornness. Or something. “You’re not coming.”
Meg’s not going to deny that. She really doesn’t want to add ‘getting maimed by the king of all gods, Apollo’s shitty dad’ to her extensive How Did Meg Die This Fine Morning list, no matter how flippant she’s being, but... “So then we’ll try to not die.”
“No,” he says flatly, and then a bit of emotion leaks into his voice and his face crumples a bit. “He – Father isn’t expecting you to show up. You’ll be fine if you just stay here, and we can try to work out the Ananke thing next time around, if I can’t make it back for whatever reason.”
Meg can’t think of a good way to tell him ‘you helped me face down my shitty terrible sort-of-dad, and you got angry at him on my behalf so there’s basically a zero percent chance that I’m going to pass up the opportunity to get angry at your shitty terrible dad to his face, especially when I’m pretty sure there’s going to be no lasting consequences’ so she just says, “If you don’t let me come with you, I’m going to stand on your foot.”
He glares at her. “You wouldn’t.”
“I will. I’ll stand on it really hard. You’ll have a stubbed toe for, like, an entire week. It’ll hurt a lot. Super a lot.”
