Growing up was about letting go of that Joe, Yoko thought that night. Letting go of the Joe who used to carry those kids around. Letting go of the Joe who always brought them things from the pachinko slots. Letting go of the summers chasing him as he did roadwork.
Coming to love Joe in whatever shape or form he took.
Sometimes, though, many, many years into the future, there would still be the old Joe, still residing somewhere deep in your heart, and you'd call him out and it would be like a hazy afternoon light that you'd bask in and smile.
It turns out that there's still quite a lot to live for when your everything is taken away.

After a certain...incident with a certain boxer, the Onihime-kai was looking to spread its tentacles from the rough, gritty streets of a former execution ground and into a decidedly more posh locale. See, the way they saw it, the Doya towns had too many ex-cons turned pro fighters who could beat the Onihime boys into a paste. Bad for business.
The soft, hoity-toity legitimate businesses, frequented by those who hadn't so much as scraped their knees in ten years -- now, that was a good place to hit the jackpot.
Mainly they were scared of running into that one boxer again -- the guy had gone to jail for a bit and beaten people up there too -- and yeah, they didn't want to mess with that wild mutt if they could help it. So Minato ward, Aoyama it was.
The Onihime-kai tries to extort the Shiraki Boxing Club. This doesn't turn out as well as they had hoped.

And then he almost got them both killed backing out of the driveway, because apparently he never realized that he should look over his shoulder while doing that.
Yoko gives Joe driving lessons in Hawaii. It's exactly as horrible as you'd expect.
